'Despite the defeat it’s a great start,' Elena Rybakina hopeful of making it big in the upcoming tournaments

World No. 4 Elena Rybakina was bidding to win her first Madrid Open title but lost a hard-fought semifinal to World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka. Despite a 6-1 lead, the Kazakh star tried her best to capitalize on it but eventually lost to the Belarusian with a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(7-5) scoreline.

Rybakina, however, was happy with her strong performance in the semifinal and with how she felt physically on the track. She thought she played well and only a few points ended the match in Sabalenka’s favor

Without a doubt, the start of the clay tour is very good. Despite the defeat today, I think I played really well. I did everything the right way. Only a couple of points ended up making a difference.  Elena Rybakina said at the press conference

Rybakina secured easy straight sets wins in the first three matches in Madrid. However, before the semifinal clash, she had to outclass her compatriot Yulia Putintseva in three sets 4-6, 7-6(7-4), 7-5.

Elena Rybakina is all set to defend her title at the Rome Open

Following the Madrid Open exit, Elena Rybakina‘s focus has now shifted to the upcoming Rome Open. She will enter the tournament in the Italian capital as the defending champion, having won the final 6-4, 1-0 last year after Anhelina Kalinina retired with a thigh injury. The 24-year-old also revealed she sometimes suffers from allergies in Rome.

Now it will be important to take a few days off and then try to acclimatize to the conditions of Rome because the ball is very different there. I usually suffer from allergies in Rome. Last year I was lucky because there was a lot of rain. Elena Rybakina said

Rybakina started this year with a thumping victory over Aryna Sabalenka at the Brisbane International final to clinch her first title of the season. Then in Abu Dhabi, she defeated Daria Kasatkina to lift another title.

A week later, she made it to another final, at the Qatar Open, but lost to World No.1 Iga Swiatek. Then in Dubai, she retired mid-match in the quarterfinal and went on to miss the Indian Wells due to illness.

The World No.4 secured her berth in the final for the fourth time this season at the Miami Open but lost to home favorite Danielle Collins. She reached back-to-back finals again in Stuttgart and defeated Marta Kostyuk. The Kazakh is also 26-4 on the season, with three titles.
