A Humble White Sox Prospect is Soaking in His Call-Up

The White Sox No. 4 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, was brought up when Danny Mendick landed on the injured list due to back tightness. Ramos had a .182 average with five doubles, two homers, nine runs scored and 11 RBI. He started the season off slowly, but put together an eight-game hitting streak, producing a .33 average with five doubles, two homers, seven RBI and seven runs scored. Ramos has done nothing but hit the ball and play well since.

“Extremely talented, extremely young. He’s got, really, all the tools to play this level,” manager Pedro Grifol said. “This is an opportunity for both parties: For him to experience it, and for us to see where he’s at in his development, which is really important, too.”

The Stats

During those 15 games, Ramos hast hit .267 with two RBI and three runs scored. He also played error-free defense across 72 innings with 26 chances- good for six putouts and 20 assists. It’s a small sample size, but Ramos is showing some potential. Hopefully, his stay at the big league level will last longer. There are some considerations however, especially if he goes back to the minors as soon as Mendick is healthy to return. Or better yet, until Yoán Moncada is healthy enough to return.

The Future for Ramos

The White Sox have a good problem to have at third base right now. They have three guys who are relatively competent at playing that position in Ramos, Moncada, and Mendick. Moncada is injured and is due back in a month or so and if Ramos is still playing well, one would suspect that Moncada may sit while Ramos continues to play. Mendick was hot in Triple-A but cooled off a bit in the majors. It’s possible that Mendick could remain in the minors while Ramos continues to play at third base as long as he can get healthy. It appears as if Ramos suffered a slight injury in the White Sox first game against the Washington Nationals.

One thing to like about Ramos is that his defense is more than solid but his bat needs to stay consistent. If he can hit consistently, Ramos will remain in the majors and could be the White Sox third baseman of the future.

The White Sox have some stars up and coming from the minor leagues. Ramos is certainly one of those players. Look for him to continue to grow and develop in the majors and end up being a star at some point in his career. It will be sooner rather than later.
